The Public Servants Association (PSA) is extremely concerned about yet another incident where learners have fallen ill after consuming snacks purchased from a local spaza shop in Mpumalanga.
This most recent case of suspected food poisoning occurred at Enzani Primary School in Mpumalanga, where 24 learners were hospitalised after eating snacks from a nearby spaza shop. Fortunately, all affected learners have since been discharged form hospital and are in a stable condition.
This incident follows a similar case earlier this month at Marhagi Secondary School, sparking widespread alarm. The PSA noted that the Department of Education is investigating both cases to ensure the safety of learners across the province. The PSA, however, urges the Department of Education to practice transparent governance by sharing the investigation results with the public promptly.
The PSA further appeals to community members who patronize spaza shops to avoid taking the law into their own hands. The PSA will continue to monitor the progress of the investigation and engage with the Head of Department of the Department of Education to ensure appropriate steps are taken to prevent similar occurrences.
