Job Purpose

ACED, in conjunction with its sister company EIMS Africa (together, the “Business”), is seeking a Project Development Manager to join our Business Development department, based in Cape Town.

As a Project Development Manager within African Clean Energy Developments (ACED), you will be required to manage various project development tasks from project site selection through to financial close.

Key / Principal Responsibilities

Project management of multiple wind and solar projects in various stages of development, ensuring completion of development tasks on schedule:

  • Assisting in the identification of suitable areas for project sites considering resource, constructability, grid access and environmental sensitivities
  • Assisting with landowner negotiations and relationship management post signing of the land
  • Assisting with general project design tasks including conceptual designs for equipment, road and electrical layout
  • Management of the various project licensing and permitting tasks
  • Liaise with the statutory organisations that administer the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and any other legalisation that may impact on renewable energy project development
  • Assisting with EPC contractor and O&M operator procurement workstreams including evaluation of bid submissions
  • Assisting with bid (REIPPPP and C&I) submissions
  • Grid capacity available assessment and Eskom Cost Estimate Letter / IGCAR process management
  • Appointment and management of consultants
  • Energy Yield Assessment review and optimization (with the assistance of consultants)
  • Management of wind measurement campaign across the portfolio of wind projects

The role will at times entail a significant amount of Project Land Acquisition support (and on occasions also lead the process) for multiple wind and solar projects, including:

  • Introductory calls and setting-up of site visits
  • Landowner Introductory Meetings
  • Landowner site and servitude contract negotiations

Key Skills and Experience

  • A degree in Engineering, Business, Law or Natural Science
  • Proven ability to speak and write fluently in English and Afrikaans
  • Project management experience within the renewable energy sector or in other industries facing similar challenges, such as infrastructure and construction
  • Possession of a valid, South Africa Code 08 driver’s license
  • Strong understanding of relevant power markets, network within renewable energy space in South Africa
  • Technical understanding of wind and solar farm design, construction and operation
  • Motivated, driven and ability to self-manage
  • Strong administrative and communication skills
  • Proven ability to work within a small team
  • Proven ability to solve problems creatively
  • Proven experience of successfully managing multiple projects within budget and on schedule
  • Dedicated, flexible and adaptable with a “can-do” attitude.

Personality Attributes

  • A good grasp of contractual and real estate concepts and terminology
  • Experience in renewable energy project development
  • Reasonable understanding of or willingness to study and learn, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Forestry (DFFE) Environmental Authorisation assessment process, ideally with respect to renewable energy projects
  • Willingness to travel to relevant project sites
  • Continued learning on relevant topics in the Renewable Energy industry
  • In addition to the duties mentioned above, the job holder is required to perform administrative duties related to a standard project management role

Resource Management / Dimensions

The Project Development Manager will manage various consultants/service providers, landowners, energy off-takers, and lenders.
