President Jacob Zuma has extended his congratulations to Hage Geingob on his election as President of Namibia following the country’s presidential and legislative elections that were held last week.
Geingob, who won the presidential race, received an overwhelming 772 528 votes, nearly 87% of all votes, trailed by McHenry Venaani of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA), who received 44 271 votes at the expense of Hidipo Hamutenya of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), who got 30 197, according to results announced by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), on Monday.
Geingob’s South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo) got 715 026 votes and won 77 of the 96 parliamentary seats, followed distantly by the DTA with 42 933 votes and five seats, while the RDP received 31 372 votes and three parliamentary seats.
In his message on Tuesday, Zuma also congratulated the people of Namibia for conducting peaceful, credible and free and fair elections
“The successful elections in Namibia attest to the stability and strength of democracy in this Southern African country,” said Zuma.
He further expressed South Africa’s readiness to continue to partner with the government and the people of Namibia in the pursuit of the already existing mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
South Africa and Namibia enjoy strong, warm and fraternal relations that are characterised by regular and increasing interaction at all levels.
