As we approach Freedom Day in South Africa, the Progressive Professionals Forum (PPF) would like to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our unsung heroes and heroines who fought for our freedom. It is because of their courage, determination, and sacrifice that South Africa is able to enjoy the freedoms it has today.
In the very same breath, the PPF would like to reflect and ponder on the prevailing challenges confronting South Africa which have a potential to threaten the project of consolidating the gains of democracy and the realization of “a better life for all”.
PPF President Kashif Wicomb says: “As South Africa celebrates Freedom Day, we must also remember that freedom is not just a political concept, but a social and economic one as well. The PPF calls on all South Africans to work together to build a more just, equitable, and prosperous society, where everyone can enjoy the fruits of our hard-won freedom”.
The PPF calls for South Africa’s Leadership to change gears and up its game to save the country’s democracy being relegated into the doldrums.
The Freedom Day celebration this week on 27 April 2023 under the theme: “Consolidating and Safeguarding Democratic Gains” means the country is just 12 months away from marking three decades since the first South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994.
Wicomb says: “On this Freedom Month, the PPF would like to pay tribute to all those who have fought and continue to fight for freedom and justice in South Africa. We salute their bravery and their unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom, and we pledge to continue their work until all South Africans can truly be free.”
“It is our duty to safeguard this very democracy we have. Now more than ever, the PPF calls on all South Africans and patriots to be active citizens and to assist the State and our country to achieve the noble ideals of our constitution and the Freedom Charter,” says Wicomb.
