Energy utility Eskom said on Monday that the electricity system would remain tight over the evening peak on Monday and would be “extremely constrained” for the rest of the week owing to planned and unplanned outages.
As a result, a high reliance on emergency resources would be required.
The capacity available to meet Monday evening’s peak demand was 34 372 MW, including open-cycle gas turbines, while demand was forecast at 33 213 MW.
Current planned maintenance for the evening stood at 2 846 MW, while unplanned outages were calculated at 5 880 MW.
“We urge customers to reduce their electricity usage, especially in the evening between [17:00 and 19:00],” said the parastatal.
