During an oversight visit to the towns of Warden, Vrede, and Memel in the Phumelela Local Municipality, the Democratic Alliance (DA) witnessed a dire situation caused by pothole-ridden roads. Please see pictures here, here, here and here.

Our delegation assessed the treacherous conditions on roads such as R103 between Warden and Vrede, R34 between Vrede and Memel, and R546 between Vrede and Standerton. These roads have become death traps, endangering countless lives. In 2019, the DA raised concerns about the number of accidents, serious injuries, and deaths on R34, but the uncaring ANC government has taken no action to date.

The economy of these three towns is suffering immensely as a result of the deteriorating road infrastructure. The tourism industry, a vital source of income for the area, heavily relies on functional roads.

When a government neglects its people, communities are forced to take matters into their own hands. The residents of Memel, demonstrating their resilience, have independently filled 380 potholes, saving lives in the process. We commend their proactive approach, this however does not abdicate government from its responsibilities.

The DA will pursue further inquiries in the Provincial Legislature to determine the department's plans for collaboration with communities under the Vala Zonke program. We remain committed to working alongside communities to improve their living conditions and revive South Africa. We urge the people to register and vote in the upcoming 2024 elections for the change our towns desperately need.
