The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) wishes its sister affiliate, the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) a successful 15th National Congress that will be taking place from the 14th to the 17th of October 2023 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

This important event is representative of the union’s commitment to the principles of democracy and worker control, and in line with this, we would like to wish all the delegates productive discussions and hope they will continue the union’s tradition of firm unity and insightful analysis of issues facing the labour movement. SACTWU is one of the federations most innovative and forward-looking unions that never disappoints in tackling issues facing the workers and the working class, and having recently celebrated their 34th anniversary on the 16th of September 2023, we are confident that they will continue in the path of championing the rights of workers in the clothing and textile industry, defending its members tirelessly while pushing against acute production conditions.

This congress presents SACTWU with an opportunity to grapple with the challenges faced by its members and develop a concrete programme of action that will respond to the challenges which include amongst others: the current volatile economy which has put strain on jobs and wages, the fight in support of local procurement as the quickest and most sustainable way of protecting and creating badly needed local jobs, etc.

Lastly, we look forward to the final progressive resolutions that will emerge from the congress with a strategic objective of strengthening the ability of SACTWU to continue to be a fighting and campaigning union that places the interests of workers at the centre.
