The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) applauds members of the South African Police for an outstanding job in seizing illegal drugs with a street value of about R2 billion in Benoni, East of Johannesburg. This is the biggest drug bust recorded this year. Members of the police discovered about three tons of mandrax in what appears to be a lab which was used to manufacture drugs over the weekend.
Although there have been no arrests at this stage, POPCRU acknowledges the ability and level of commitment shown by our members in this regard. This discovery couldn’t have come at a better time and we are proud that the police have managed to fully carry out their mandate of protecting and serving South Africans. We further urge members of the public to cooperate with the police in reporting similar cases and ensuring that those who defy the laws of the land face the long arm of justice.
Our members have made numerous drug discoveries over the past months and we hope this will send a clear message to drug manufacturers and dealers that South Africa is not a drug hub. We urge thorough investigations into cases of this nature and hope the Justice Department will fully enforce the law to criminals. POPCRU also encourages members of the public to assist SAPS members in apprehend the suspects involved in this case.
