The Portfolio Committee on Police will tomorrow (Wednesday, 10 May 2017) hold hearings on the budget of the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA). The meeting will take place in the Old Assembly Chamber, from 09h00.
Committee Chairperson Mr Francois Beukman said the Committee will also use this meeting to reflect on policing-related issues currently in the public domain, including the Vuwani, Coligny and Eldorado Park situations.
The Committee will also address the reported interference affecting the work of the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID). In last Wednesday’s Committee meeting, IPID management complained about some members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) seeking to undermine its independence by hindering certain investigations.
On the concerns relating to the inadequacy of IPID’s budget, Mr Beukman said the Committee will address this during next week’s finalisation of the IPID budget vote report. IPID has complained about budget cuts, saying insufficient budget prevented it from fulfilling some of its responsibilities.
