The Presiding Officers of Parliament, led by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mr Amos Masondo, would like to wish the Muslim community a peaceful and reflective holy month of Ramadan.
The Muslim holy month of Ramadan will begin on Monday, March 11 or Tuesday, March 12, depending on the sighting of the new moon. The fast lasts from dawn to dusk for anywhere from 12 to 17 hours. During this period, people abstain from various things, including eating and drinking during daylight hours.
The holy month is characterised by fasting, prayer, giving to charity and reaching out to the poor and vulnerable.
The Presiding Officers trust that the Muslim community will use this period to introspect, reflect, worship, and pray for all South Africans to overcome economic hardship and social ills that affect their daily lives.
Ramadan Mubarak.
