Parliament, Wednesday 18 August 2021 – The National Assembly (NA) will tomorrow, Thursday 19 August, hold a plenary sitting to elect a new National Assembly Speaker at 11:00.

The position of the NA Speaker became vacant when President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Ms Thandi Modise, as the new Defence Minister and Military Veterans.

Section 52 (2) of the Constitution compels the Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa or a judge designated by him to preside over the election of a Speaker.
