Only three out of seven eye testing machines are working at the Kempton Park Driver’s Licence and Testing Centre (DLTC) in Ekurhuleni which is causing long waiting times for our motorists who are wanting to renew their licences and make an appointment for learners and driver’s test.

This service delivery challenge was discovered by the Democratic Alliance (DA) during an oversight inspection at the Kempton Park DLTC.

During our interaction with the manager of the DLTC, she indicated that the main issue she has is with the ‘runners’ who operate outside the centre.

These so-called ‘runners’ approach motorists who are coming to the DLTC in a bid to offer a quicker way in which they can get a licence.

This is very concerning, especially given the recent revelation that over 190 000 driver's licences may be cancelled because of corruption.

The only way in which this problem can be eradicated is if the South African Police Service (SAPS) conduct regular patrols outside the DLTCs across the province.

The DA has also confirmed that this DLTC does have a working generator that kicks in as soon as there is load-shedding or a power outage.

We will be engaging directly with the MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, about the plans that the department has in ensuring that all DLTCs are equipped with the new eye testing machines as the old ones are prone to breaking.

The efficiency with which this DLTC operates under the Ekurhuleni Municipality is proof that a DA-led government will always ensure that our residents get the service delivery they deserve.
