In his first year as the Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, Daylin Mitchell, has made great progress in the ongoing efforts to restore the credibility of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP). The speaker has taken on the pivotal role of the Speaker with a clear commitment to upholding and reinstating the core values that underpin the WCPP as a vital institution of democracy.

A Back to Basics’ approach was adopted. This emphasized the principle that as an institution it will focus on the core mandate, prioritising essential services and cutting back on ‘nice to have’ initiatives that do not meaningfully impact the role and function as a legislative institution.

The WCPP is actively working to strengthen the institution's commitment to these values, ensuring that the voice of the people is not only heard but also respected.

It is of paramount importance for the WCPP to ensure that the principles of democracy, transparency, accountability, and justice are upheld in the Western Cape.

Instituting these values involves creating an environment where open and robust debate is encouraged, where the rights and perspectives of all members are honoured, and where decisions are made based on the best interests of the public. The new Speaker has shown dedication to promoting fair and just parliamentary procedures, fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity, and reinvigorating public trust in the WCPP.

MPP Wendy Kaizer-Philander said: “Building a credible provincial legislature is essential for a variety of reasons, as it plays a critical role in the governance and development of the region. A credible provincial legislature helps ensure good governance, the rule of law, and the effective functioning of a provincial government.

The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape will continue to make sure that credible progress is being made to further develop the Western Cape Provincial Parliament as an institution, and continues to remain accountable to the people.”
