Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and Governments restrictions on sport this year, the South African Rugby Legends Association, a non profit organisation is another one of those organisations that have been hit by the backlash of Covid.  SARLA has unfortunately had to cancel two of its biggest rugby development programmes, namely The Vuka and Iqhawe programmes as funding for these tournaments was cut.

Along with that, certain operational restructuring has been implemented in order to bring operating costs in line with current revenue being generated.  Stefan Terblanche, CEO of SARLA has made a decision to  step down to pursue other interests.  “On behalf of the Board, the staff and SARLA’s legends, we want to thank Stefan for his valued contribution to SARLA over the past 8 years and wish him all the very best in the next chapter of his career”, said Gavin Varejes, President of SARLA.

Founded in 2001, the South African Rugby Legends Association is a registered non-profit company (NPC) with two complimentary objectives:  Developing rugby at the grassroots level and supporting the needs and interests of our communities and our country.

The Board of SARLA which consists of former players and prominent South African businessmen, will oversee the management of SARLA.  The regional offices in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg will remain open.  “Our hope is to move back to full time rugby programmes next year, so that SARLA can continue changing lives of the kids in our disadvantaged communities that rely on our development programmes to give them hope for a better future”, said John Smit, Board member of SARLA.
