On Wednesday March 22, 2017 the National Education Health & Allied Workers Union [NEHAWU] had an extensive negotiating meeting in Tshwane with the Department of Social Development upon the request of the employer to table a response to the NEHAWU memorandum of demands which led to the current strike.
The employer tabled an offer in response to the demands made by the national union during its march on February 10, 2017 for consideration. As the national union, we noted the employer’s response and agreed on a mandating process utilising the entire day of Thursday March 23, 2017 to consult our members on the picket lines.
Both parties will reconvene tomorrow afternoon to report on their mandates and consultation processes with a view of concluding a collective agreement.
NEHAWU will continue to brief the media and the public on the strike accordingly and on the engagements that are ongoing between ourselves and the Department of Social Development.
