The National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL) mourns the untimely passing of former Constitutional Court Justice Yvonne Mokgoro.
Her dedication to justice, unwavering integrity, and significant contributions to the legal field have left an indelible mark on our Country. Justice Mokgoro was a beacon of inspiration and a true trailblazer and pioneer in the legal profession. Throughout her distinguished career, she exemplified the highest standards of professionalism and leadership. Her intellect, compassion, and commitment to upholding the rule of law set a precedent for generations to come.
As the first female judge appointed to the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Justice Mokgoro shattered barriers and paved the way for greater gender equality in the judiciary. Her landmark decisions and judgements played a pivotal role in shaping our constitutional democracy and advancing the cause of justice for all. Beyond her remarkable legal achievements, Justice Mokgoro was known for her grace, humility, and dedication to public service. She will be remembered not only for her legal acumen but also for her kindness, generosity, and willingness to mentor and support others in the legal community.
The loss of Justice Yvonne Mokgoro is deeply felt by the legal profession, the judiciary, and by our country. Her legacy will endure as a testament to the power of principle, courage, and commitment in the pursuit of justice and equality.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Justice Mokgoro's family, and particular, Tebogo Job Mokgoro - her loving husband and their five children, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May her memory be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her. And while we are saddened that Justice Mokgoro has been laid to rest, there is comfort in knowing that her extraordinary spirit will live on.
