The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Senzo Mchunu, is in Mkuze, KwaZulu- Natal, to outline the projects which will be embarked upon following the Department’s intervention in terms of section 63 of the Water Services Act, 108 of 1997, in uMkhanyakude District Municipality.
Minister Mchunu convened 3 meetings today; the first one comprising of the Mayor of uMkhanyakude and Members of Exco; the second meeting with the Mayor and Council Members, from various political parties, namely, the ANC, IFP and EFF, amongst others; and the third with the Traditional Leadership. These meetings all have one central theme: delivery of water to communities in uMkhanyakude District Municipality.
The right to water is a basic human right entrenched in the Constitution, which Constitution places an obligation on Government (throughout all spheres) to work together towards the progressive realisation of the rights contained therein, regardless of political affiliations or which party is in charge.
The overall purpose of the meetings was for the Minister to take the Mayor and the Council Members into confidence concerning the water projects to be implemented in uMkhanyakude District Municipality for the provision of water services to communities and further to introduce Mhlathuze Water as the Implementing Agent for these projects.
