Parliament, Wednesday, 16 March 2022 - The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will from tomorrow, Thursday 17 March 2022, take its nationwide public hearings on the Electoral Amendment Bill to the North West Province.
The Bill seeks to introduce amendments to the Electoral Act 73 of 1998 after the Constitutional Court ruled that it was unconstitutional, to the extent that it does not allow independent candidates to contest elections to the National Assembly and provincial legislatures. The court gave Parliament 24 months to remedy the defect.
The committee invites all individuals and interested organisations to come and make inputs on the Bill, to ensure that the final product is reflective of their will and aspirations. The committee recognises that the hearings occur while the risks posed by Covid-19 continue and has taken steps to minimise the risks to participants.
