The Gauteng Economic Development MEC, Ms Tasneem Motara, held a session to introduce board members of the Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB), Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) and Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA). The former board members’ term of office came to an end on 30 September 2023, having started their tenure on 01 October 2020.
In June of 2023, the Department undertook the process to appoint new boards for the entities as guided by their respective founding legislation. This was done in accordance with the respective legislation, which require that the MEC calls for nominations in the media and government gazette, prior to the appointment of new boards. These are the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller Act No.05 of 2005, the Tourism Act No. 03 of 2014 and the Gauteng Liquor Board Act No.02 of 2003.
The process was initiated with the first publication of the call for nominations on 19 July 2023 in the provincial gazette, with subsequent publications in The Star and The City Press newspapers. The publications attracted great interest from the public which saw the Department receiving a total of 460 applications across all three public entities. After an assessment was conducted, only 174 applications met the minimum requirements and could therefore be considered to serve on the respective Boards.
Following the assessment of the applications, a long list of nominees meeting requirements was presented to the HOD and MEC for consideration. Shortlists were further subjected to a vetting procedure and the outcome thereof was presented to the MEC in preparation for the consultation with the Executive Council. After deliberations, EXCO approved the final recommended candidates who are representative of the broad spectrum of the country’s demographics.
Speaking at the introductory session, MEC Motara highlighted the fact that all three boards were led by female chairpersons, adding; “This is indeed in line with our commitment to appoint deserving and qualified women in executive leadership position. Moreover, we have retained the chairpersons of GEP and GTA” She also noted that across the three boards, female representation was also in the majority.
“We look forward to attracting more young people into our boards. The current 6% youth and 3% for persons with disability is above the minimum threshold. However, more needs to done,” said Motara.
Addressing the board members, the MEC outlined her expectations for each organisation and board as follows:
Gauteng Liquor Board
The entity got a clean audit outcome for the first-time, which the shareholder expects to be maintained.
Public participation should be heightened and complaints management. Be improved.
The liquor automation system to be implemented as soon as possible, keeping in line with commitments made to Premier Lesufi and the Gauteng Exco.
Gauteng Enterprise Propeller
The board should strive to obtain a clean audit outcome, after receiving an unqualified audit in the past financial year of 2022/2023
To sustain the successes on loan collections,
Loan collection rate to be increased.
Look into the status of loan book over the last five years.
Gauteng Tourism Authority
To move from an unqualified audit outcome in 2022/2023 financial year to a clean audit and address all matters that need attention.
“On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government I commend the GTA for its successful hosting of various events such as the DSTV Delicious Festival, which has now incorporated training of newcomers into the food and beverage sector, its contribution to the recently held Joy of Jazz Festival and of course the work the team did on the BRICS Summit 2023,” added MEC Motara.
