Oliver Tambo House, Pietermaritzburg: As we start August - the Women’s Month, we continue with our focus aimed at fast-tracking the entry of emerging entrepreneurs, from the previously disadvantaged communities, into the mainstream built industry.
Today, is the first day of a three-day training workshop aimed at preparing emerging entrepreneurs to be part of the infrastructure revolution. It should remembered that last year we presented a clear plan on the Infrastructure Revolution across the province. We wish to report that the department has completed more than 400 capital projects across all districts at a combined cost of more than R 1, 1 billion.
As part of job creation and ensuring access to economic opportunities, we want emerging entrepreneurs to be part of the entire value chain of the built industry.
To this end, we have planned a series of training workshops with municipalities to ensure that there is one plan and similar objectives. Through a proper co-ordination with municipalities and government departments, we are focusing on skills acquisition.
Critically, we want each individual who is part of Expanded Public Works Programme to be empowered such that upon exit, they must be capable of sustaining themselves independently using their skills to survive.
In this regard, we are focusing on producing fully fledged artisans and other skills to improve the participant’s appeal in the open market. It is the technical skills that will grow the economy of our province and enable us to compete with best in the world.
The three-day training will enable emerging contractors to enroll for a certificate with National Home Builders Registration Council. They will be registered as Home Builders within Msunduzi Municipality under uMgungundlovu District Municipality.
Journalists with an interest in the construction sector and socio-economic developments may RSVP through Ms Sibongile Dlangalala on sibongile.dlangalala@kznworks.gov.za or 082 3149402
