The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, will hit the opening tee shot to officially start the 2022 Joburg Ladies Open, hosted by the City of Johannesburg, at Modderfontein Golf Club on Thursday, 24 March 2022.

Launched on the Sunshine Ladies Tour in 2016, this marks the first year that the Joburg Ladies Open will feature on the Ladies European Tour circuit.

The 54-hole event boasts a purse of €250 000 and prize money will be shared by the winner and all players who make the 36-hole cut to 60 and ties on Friday.

The 2022 champion is guaranteed playing privileges on the Ladies European Tour. The winner receives Category 8 exemption status for the remainder of the 2022 season and the full 2023 season.

Casandra Alexander (nee Hall) will defend the title she earned in a hard-fought victory at Soweto Country Club last year, where she prevailed in an epic final round tussle with 10-time Ladies European Tour champion Lee-Anne Pace.

Alexander will be going up against other strong established golfers, including the 2016 winner Pace and Nobuhle Dlamini, the first champion crowned at Soweto Country Club in 2015.

On site testing and screening will be conducted as a precautionary measure for all professional golfers, caddies as well as tournament staff in accordance with the Covid-19 public health and containment requirements, particularly for non-contact sports.

Spectators are allowed and entry is free. Following the address by President, Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday, to further ease the adjusted Level 1 Lock-down regulations coming to effect today, spectators will be required to produce proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test not older than 72 hours.

Members of the media are invited to attend and cover tomorrow’s proceedings as follows:

Date:              Thursday, 24 March 2022.

Time:              06:00

Venue:           Modderfontein Golf Club.

ENDS

Issued by the City of Joburg
