ActionSA President, Herman Mashaba, will tomorrow, Wednesday 15 November 2023, visit two Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, which ActionSA helped upgrade to highlight the industry’s importance amid planned budget cuts by the South African government.
In his recent Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, announced that the infrastructure budget for ECD centres will be cut by R50 million, at a time when the government already spends a meagre R17 a day on a child in a state-authorised ECD centre compared to the R363 a day spent on a prisoner.
Mashaba will be joined by ActionSA Senator, ECD and Basic Education Spokesperson, Cllr Angela Sobey, who spearheaded the repairs and improvements to the ECD centres.
As a party which values quality education, ActionSA believes ECD centres play a crucial role in improving educational outcomes for at-risk youth and therefore should receive additional support.
