The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality expresses deep concern over blatant political interference in a vital departmental project by FS MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae.

During a recent handover ceremony, the MEC shockingly and publicly announced the inclusion of 2 wards in a project beyond its intended scope. This decision, prompted by a fellow cadre and ANC councillor, constitutes a flagrant breach of regulations, as political appointees are strictly prohibited from interfering in contracts or labour selection. The unilateral and illegal action sets a detrimental precedent, potentially leading job seekers from all wards to demand involvement in projects outside the designated boundaries.

This ill-advised move not only bewilders job seekers but also jeopardizes the positions of the already selected project workers. The prospects of these labourers losing their part-time employment, and subsequently struggling to provide for their families, are high. This situation could escalate tensions and adversely impact the project. Given the escalating unemployment rates, the MEC's reckless decision is poised to sow discord within communities.

It is evident that the MEC's decision lacks rationale and appears to serve only as a means to secure political favours. This incident further exemplifies how the ANC has detrimentally influenced the municipality, employing both cadre deployment and sub-servience.

The DA commits to elevating this issue to the provincial level, demanding that the MEC be held accountable for her ill-conceived decision. We are resolute in ensuring that any project delays arising from labour disputes due to this foolishness are attributed to the MEC's actions.
