Eskom has announced that it will implement Stage 6 loadshedding from 12:00 on Friday to 05:00 on Monday.
The declaration came amid 'Black Friday', during which retailers experience a surge in customer activity as shoppers seek to take advantage of price specials.
The State-owned utility attributed the escalation in loadshedding from Stage 4 to 6 to the loss of five generating units over the past 24 hours.
It reported that unplanned outages stood at 15 901 MW, while the capacity out of service for planned maintenance was 5 822 MW.
The load forecast for the evening peak demand is 27 206 MW.
Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa would provide a briefing at 15:00.
