George Municipality hereby confirms that its licencing offices remain closed for the processing of vehicle and driving licences, and that current licences remain valid until further notice.

Municipal Manager Trevor Botha said the municipality was in the advanced stages of preparing for the re-opening of its licencing offices in line with Covid-19 health and safety measures. “This includes deep cleaning and sanitising of buildings and setting up for the implementation of social distancing and hand sanitising points as well as protective gear and other applicable measures to safeguard staff and clients,” said Mr Botha.

The municipality traffic department is awaiting confirmation from provincial and national authorities regarding a confirmed date for the opening of the online vehicle and driving licencing systems, and details of phased opening of such facilities.

“The public is reminded that the George Municipality is a licencing agent of the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works and can only issue licences once the motor vehicle registration authority has resumed their duties and online licencing systems have been activated.

“Similarly, driving and learner licence driving tests can only recommence when the national system is back online and Covid-19 health and safety measures inside testing vehicles and facilities have been sufficiently addressed. Until such time driving and learner driving tests for this period will be postponed and applicants will receive an SMS after expiry of lockdown, or after whichever applicable level of lockdown, to confirm new dates. “

Current learner’s licences, driving licences, motor vehicle licence disks, temporary permits, professional driving permits and roadworthy certificates remain valid and shall be extended for a further grace period of 30 days from the date of expiry of the lockdown period (or after whichever applicable level of lockdown). Such a date has so far not been issued and will be announced in due course, well in advance.
Validity of motor trading numbers will be extended six months from expiry of the lockdown (or after whichever applicable level of lockdown). Such a date has so far not been issued and will be announced in due course, well in advance.
Until such time, the George Municipality has made temporary provision for electronic payment of vehicle licence renewals only, but a disk will not be issued until the online system is available.
