The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Xola Nqola, today warmly welcomed the appointment of Justice Nambitha Dambuza-Mayosi and Justice Katharine Savage as judges of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

The appointments, made by President Cyril Ramaphosa in terms of the Constitution, are set to take effect from 1 May 2026 following the constitutionally mandated consultation process with Chief Justice Mandisa Maya and the leaders of political parties represented in the National Assembly.

Mr Nqola noted that both appointees bring a wealth of legal expertise and an impeccable track record of judicial service to the apex court. The Chairperson echoed the sentiments of President Ramaphosa, noting that these appointments coincide with the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the South African Constitution. “These important appointments come at a significant milestone in our democratic journey and constitute a meaningful step towards the continued transformation of the judiciary, not only in respect of racial representation but also in advancing gender parity, in line with our constitutional values,” elaborated Mr Nqola.

Justice Dambuza-Mayosi is a seasoned jurist who has served on the Supreme Court of Appeal since 2015. Her career, spanning over 30 years across legal practice, academia and the judiciary, includes significant leadership experience as the Acting President of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Justice Savage has been an accomplished judge of the Western Cape High Court since 2015 and also of the Labour Appeal Court since 2024, known for her rigorous dedication to the Labour and High Court benches.

“The committee commends the President for the appointment of these two female jurists, in recognition of their distinguished achievements and extensive experience,” emphasised the Chairperson.
