For two decades, the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) has been a game changer in providing affordable housing to thousands of residents.

Established by the City of Johannesburg in 2004, JOSHCO aims to bridge the housing gap for lower-income households, offering affordable rental options to residents with monthly incomes between R1,850 and R22,000.

With a portfolio of over 9,000 units, JOSHCO not only provides quality housing but also offers commercial spaces and student accommodation. Its properties are strategically located in five of the city’s regions — B, C, D, E, and F — ensuring that residents across Johannesburg have access to secure, well-maintained homes and nearby essential services.

For many backyard dwellers and informal traders, JOSHCO's affordable homes have been life-changing, offering them stability, safety, and a place to proudly call home. The company also manages city-owned properties and hostels, improving living conditions for many more residents.

JOSHCO recently announced the official launch of the highly anticipated Ridge on Abel Street Social Housing Project on 4 October 2024, in Berea, Region F.

The Ridge on Abel Street is a cutting-edge 12-story building, designed to cater to individuals entering the job market, including young professionals, recent graduates, and those who are self-employed. The building offers 155 rental residential units, including 144 bachelor apartments and 11 one-bedroom units, with rental prices ranging from R1100 to R1900, making it an affordable housing solution for many in the inner city.

Equipped with modern amenities such as 24-hour CCTV surveillance, biometric access, parking facilities, and two elevators, the project ensures residents’ comfort and security.

As a registered Social Housing Institution, accredited by the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA), JOSHCO upholds high standards of quality and governance. By placing its housing projects near transport hubs, the organisation ensures convenient access to public transportation and essential amenities.

Through its commitment to affordability, accessibility, and community needs, JOSHCO is addressing Johannesburg's housing shortage and improving the lives of countless families across the city.
