The current FF+/PA/ANC coalition in Theewaterskloof is undermining legitimate and lawful democratic processes and preventing the majority of councillors from forming a stable coalition in the municipality.
This comes after they opted to use municipal resources to approach the courts to have the motion of no confidence against Mayor Tienie Zimmerman, which was scheduled for today, stalled.
They obtained an interim court order without serving papers on the parties who are represented in Council depriving the Court of hearing opposing arguments.
The DA/GOOD/SRWP condemns the unlawful cling to power and they are, quite frankly, using the courts as a very expensive and futile stalling exercise.
Two pivotal positions need to be filled: Speaker and Executive Deputy Mayor.
However, in today’s meeting, the ANC demanded that the Council be adjourned thus prompting the Acting Municipal Manager to postpone proceedings outside of the Council rules and without a rational reason.
The FF+/PA/ANC’s ongoing struggle for power reflects a broader challenge in governance: the reluctance to relinquish power. This is stomach politics for the benefit of a few councillors at the expense of pressing needs of Theewaterskloof residents.
The DA/GOOD/SRWP coalition recognises the importance of the well-being of our residents, fostering an environment where diverse voices are heard and respected. The same cannot be said for those desperately clinging to power.
The reality is that the new coalition will ultimately prevail and we expect that there should be consequences for those who participated in these undemocratic and wasteful activities.
