International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrates the economic, political, and social achievements of women: past, present and in the future. The theme for IWD 2022 is “#Break the Bias”. This theme seeks a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination, a world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, and which acts for equality.

To mark this important day, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) and the Minerals Council South Africa will co-host a breakfast on 08 March 2022 from 07:30 to 09:30 at Tsogo Sun, Rosebank.

Due to limited seating under Covid-19 restrictions, physical media attendance will be limited to the first five respondents. The event will be streamed live on https://vimeo.com/event/1897335

We will celebrate the achievements of women in mining while appreciating that more work must be done. Ten women who were selected as “Modernisation Heroes” in the Minerals Council’s Women in Mining initiative will be recognised on the day. These women have made a marked contribution through exemplary technological innovation, research and improved processes to their respective mining companies’ modernisation strategies and towards improving operations.

There will be a media briefing at 9:30am to 10am, with a representative from the DMRE, Minerals Council President Nolitha Fakude and the Modernisation Heroes. Individual interviews may be held with the Modernisation Heroes.

Please email Allan Seccombe at the Minerals Council (email address below) if you would like to attend or set up interviews with the Modernisation Heroes.

Brief video interviews with the ten women and a summary of their achievements will be available on the Minerals Council website (https://www.mineralscouncil.org.za/)
