As per the rules of the Johannesburg Council, Colleen Makhubele’s departure from COPE means that she is no longer a proportional representative councillor, nor the Speaker of Council.
Political instability in Johannesburg has become the norm, and under Speaker Makhubele’s leadership, the council chamber has turned into a circus. Her departure from COPE and Council is a symptom of a disease that only has one cure – the dissolution of Johannesburg’s council.
Speaker Makhubele's decision comes at a time when her commitment to accountability and adherence to due process is under serious question. The DA's persistent legal actions against her demonstrates a pattern of disregard for proper procedures and democratic principles in council proceedings. Her move to SARA, we believe, is an attempt to run away from accountability for these actions.
Frequent legal disputes, procedural irregularities, and now the shifting allegiances of key members, continue to erode public trust and hamper effective administration.
We firmly believe that the residents of Johannesburg deserve better. They deserve a council that is transparent, accountable, and fully committed to delivering quality services. Therefore, we call for new elections, providing the people of Johannesburg the opportunity to rescue their city and set a new course for its future.
This is not just about the future of Johannesburg but also about safeguarding the democratic foundations of South Africa.
The DA will remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the integrity of the council and upholding the principles of good governance for the people of Johannesburg.
Issued by Cllr Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku - DA Johannesburg Caucus Leader
