This week marked a significant milestone for the City as the Southern Farms Biodiversity Development Project was officially launched in Devland, ushering in a groundbreaking R27-billion biodiversity development covering an expansive 4000 hectares.

The auspicious event took place at Freedom Primary School, graced by the honourable presence of Council Speaker Cllr. Margaret Arnolds as well as Chief Whip Cllr. Sithembiso Zungu, alongside several members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs).

Notable attendees included MMC for Economic Development Nomoya Mnisi, MMC for Finance Dada Morero, MMC for Community Development Lubabalo Magwentshu, MMC for Development Planning Eunice Mgcina, and various other dignitaries who came together to launch and celebrate the momentous occasion.

With an impressive R27-billion investment, the project aims to address critical issues in the City, including housing, economic opportunities, job creation, SMME, and training opportunities.

The mega project is slated to provide approximately 45,000 housing units, seven local neighbourhood parks with play facilities, six multi-purpose sports courts, a local library, two home affairs offices, and more.

In his keynote address, MMC Morero said the positive impact this project will have on the lives of Southern Farm residents and the broader Johannesburg community is innumerable.  

Morero said the project would address economic issues and challenges and be a source of pride for both Region G residents and the City as a whole.

“Our commitment is to ensure that the community of Region G not only gains from the housing component but also benefits from the business aspect of this project," he said.

Thobile Zondo, the Councillor for Ward 119, expressed excitement about the opportunities and positive impacts this project will bring to the community.

The official launch of Southern Farms fills the community with hope for a brighter future, aligning with promises of housing, economic opportunities, and job creation that deeply resonate with the community's needs.

Local residents and business owners attended in large numbers, eager to understand the potential impact of the project on their lives and businesses.

Sedima Moseamedi, owner of the construction company Sephahaphaha Trading and Projects, expressed excitement and hope for the project's positive influence on local businesses.

The day was filled with anticipation and excitement, complemented by performances from local dancers Dreams Come True Drum Majorette and Amaphikelela Traditional Dance, adding to the positive ambiance of the day. Following the celebrations, dignitaries and attendees were taken to Southern Farms, providing them with a glimpse of the project and a promising start to greener pastures.
