City of Johannesburg Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo succumbed to Covid-19 on Friday, following a short hospital stay.

Acting Executive Mayor Eunice Mgcina said they had hoped that Makhubo would beat the virus and return to work as Gauteng battles with the pandemic.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades,” she said.

Mgcina added that the Mayor’s office and Speaker of Council will announce further details in due course.

Meanwhile, condolences to Makhubo’s family have been pouring in from across the country, including from ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba and GOOD’s Matthew Cook.
