The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has suspended phase two of the state-of-the-art Brixton Social Cluster construction.

Nkomaba Trading and Projects, the main contractor, was recently terminated due to poor performance.

As part of the strategy of the City of Johannesburg to meet this demand for new social infrastructure, the JDA has been implementing phase two of the construction of the Social Cluster.

The project is implemented on behalf of the City of Johannesburg and entails of the creation of a public square, new library, new coffee shop, the upgraded green open space and kids play area and upgraded swimming pool.

The first phase of the project consisted of constructing a new multi-purpose recreation centre, new and upgraded sports fields and combi-courts, parking, landscaping (hard and soft), lighting, fencing and artwork. In 2020, the JDA completed this phase with the facility subsequently officially opening its doors in September of 2021.

The JDA appointed Nkomaba Trading and Projects for phase two of the facility to commence in February 2022. The JDA is now proceeding with a new procurement process to source a new contractor, which will lead to a considerable delay with the completion, and therefore a new date for the completion of the facility will be revised.

“The JDA remains committed to transformation of the Brixton Social Cluster from its previous underdeveloped and deteriorating state to a vibrant and sustainable social cluster that will offer a range of uses and choices to people who live, play and study,” says Siyabonga Genu, the Executive Manager: Project Implementation at the JDA.

“The Brixton community has been eagerly anticipating the completion of this facility, which will serve as a vital resource for residents of all ages. We understand the disappointment and frustration that this delay may cause, and we want to assure the community that we are doing everything possible to get the project back on track,” says Genu.
