For every well-known name in South African history, there are others whose contributions, though no less significant, have received far less attention. Isaiah Bud-M'belle (1870–1947) was one such figure.
He was one of the most accomplished Black South Africans of his generation, yet his story has been largely overshadowed by history. He is remembered, if at all, as the brother-in-law of the more famous Sol Plaatje. In 1892 he became the first African to pass the Cape Civil Service Examination, going on to a distinguished career as a High Court interpreter and senior Native Affairs Department official, all while championing African education and helping to found what would become Fort Hare University.
A remarkable new biography by Brian Willan and Brown Maabe uncovers the details not only of Bud-M'belle's life and achievements, and his triumphs and failures, but explores the complexities and contradictions of his position as both government servant and spokesman for his people.
