Leading global law firm Baker McKenzie has further expanded its tax practice in Africa with the appointment of indirect tax specialist Seelan Moonsamy. Moonsamy joined the Firm as a Tax Consultant in Baker McKenzie’s Johannesburg office on 1 December 2017.

Seelan was previously a tax manager at a local South African firm where he advised on the full range of issues related to indirect tax. He started his career in tax at SARS before joining a big four audit firm. After this, Seelan was a director responsible for all legislative aspects and policy issues related to the design of indirect taxes at the National Treasury. He has an MCom in Tax and a Masters in Business Leadership (Advanced Strategic Finance & Leadership).

Seelan will further bolster Baker McKenzie’s current South African tax team, comprising a number of experienced and highly-regarded tax practitioners who specialise in international and cross-border tax issues in Africa.

“We are delighted that Seelan is joining the tax team, where he will add considerable value with his experience in indirect tax. Our South African tax team provides our clients with an integrated, full-service tax offering across the continent, and is supported by the Baker McKenzie global tax practice, which is one of the most highly-regarded in the world.  As such Baker McKenzie, through its office in Johannesburg, is the tax consultancy firm of choice for clients doing business not only in South Africa, but also the rest of Africa,” says Stephan Spamer, Head of Tax.
