The IFP condemns in the strongest possible terms the violence that has
erupted during the farm workers strike in De Doorns. IFP Spokesperson on
Labour, Mr Albert Mncwango MP said, "We respect workers constitutional
rights to strike but urge restraint and calm from the strikers as well as
the police. Violence and destruction of property are not methods of
negotiation and must be met with the full force of the law. We are pleased
to learn that all parties to this action are currently in talks and that a
resolution is imminent."
It is also of great concern that the strike became so violent that a man who
was not even part of the strike was shot dead by the police with rubber
bullets.
Mncwango added, "This strike has effectively placed all De Doorns residents'
lives at risk and has also led to the closing of four medical clinics in the
area. People are afraid to walk the streets in case they are shot at and
those who require medical attention must go to another town to access it".
The IFP will always question the sensibility of embarking on strike action
whilst negotiations are continuing. "We urge all stakeholders concerned to
find a middle ground so that normality may ensue and the people of De Doorns
continue with their peaceful lives," said Mncwango.
IFP calls on Government to urgently intervene in this situation as it
appears to be escalating and intensifying. We call upon Government to step
in before another tragedy occurs. Our country does not need another
Marikana.
