The recent announcement that the MEC for the Department of Education, Wendy Matsemela, will tomorrow release the provincial matric results at a school in Potchefstroom, is yet another example of the Department’s failure to lead by example.

It is a crying shame that the MEC decided to host the matric results event at this particular school, while learners at the Promosa Secondary School are expected to attend school surrounded by asbestos classrooms, unsafe buildings, overcrowded classrooms and a school hall without proper lighting and ceilings.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is of the view that, if the Promosa Secondary School is safe for learners to attend classes, it should be safe for the MEC to utilise for the release of the matric results.

The DA has previously written to the MEC about the asbestos classrooms and a complaint was lodged with the South African Human Rights Commission. This however, did not move the Department to action and the health and safety risks remain.

The ANC government demonstrated its indifference to education when they chose to build a R486 000 guard house at the same school, while countless other challenges are overlooked.
