The Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (Hospersa) will join the Matlosana Municipality in North West province in a march to address gender-based violence against women and children.

The purpose of the march is to raise concerns on the escalating levels of violence targeted at women and children in recent weeks.

Gender-based violence against women and children has been under the spotlight in recent weeks, following the spike in attacks on women and children.  In the North West province, several incidents were reported where one incident involved the murder of a 15 year old girl, Nombuyiselo Nombewu.

The young girl was reported missing for two days before her burnt body was found in an open field in Jouberton, Klersdorp, on 14 May 2017.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) arrested a man and charged him for the murder.  The bail application hearing took place on 29 May 2017 at Klersdorp Magistrate Court where Hospersa members and the community at large demonstrated outside the court, opposing the granting of bail.  The accused abondoned his bail application and the case was postponed to 31 July 2017 for further investigations.

The march seeks to address the rising levels of crime against women and children in the North West province as well as in South Africa as a whole.  A memorandum will be handed to the SAPS, raising concerns on these gruesome crimes and calling for harsh sentences against the perpetrators found guilty.

Please see details of the march below:

Date:                       29 June 2017

Time:                      09:00 (memorandum to be handed over at approximately 11:00)

March Route:        From different community wards in Jouberton to Brazil stadium (Jouberton, Klerksdorp)

For interviews please contact Hospersa National Youth coordinator Mzukisi Jam – 071-995-2822.
