The Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, Mosa Chabane, has called on the Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Mike Masiapato, to urgently visit the Beitbridge Border Post to address the continued illegal entry of undocumented migrants into South Africa.

Due to the urgency and scale of the matter, the committee will on 2 June 2026 meet with the BMA, the DHA and the Cross Border Road Transport Agency on the concerning persistent entry of unroadworthy transport carrying illegal immigrants.
 
The call follows the interception in Limpopo of two overloaded minibus taxis transporting 65 occupants, including children, of whom 54 were found to be without valid documentation to enter the country. “The persistent entry into the country without documents, especially through Beitbridge, is a major concern and must be urgently addressed,” Mr Chabane emphasised.
 
The Chairperson further stated that transport operators have a responsibility to ensure they transport documented and lawful travellers, particularly in border towns. He called on the BMA Commissioner to engage with taxi operators, bus companies and the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency to streamline operations and strengthen compliance measures to ensure the lawful movement of people and goods across the border.
 
Mr Chabane also condemned the dangerous overloading of the taxis, warning that the consequences could have been catastrophic. “If the taxis were involved in an accident, the loss of life would have been unimaginable,” he said.
 
The Chairperson also called on Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster to consider  permanent road blocks in all our ports of entry in South Africa.
