The GOOD Party welcomes the establishment of the GNU Clearing House mechanism, a key instrument in implementing the GNU Statement of Intent signed three months ago.

While there are policy differences between some of the parties to the GNU, and some policy issues were raised at last night’s first meeting of the Clearing House, discussions on these matters were deferred and the meeting was constructive and conducted in a positive manner.

The GNU Statement of Intent made a number of commitments to the people of South Africa including:

  • Rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth
  • Creating a more just society by tackling poverty, spatial inequalities and providing a social safety net
  • Stabilising local government
  • Investing in people through education, skills development and affordable quality healthcare
  • Building state capacity
  • Strengthening law enforcement agencies
  • Strengthening the effectiveness of Parliament
  • Strengthening social cohesion
  • Foreign policy based on human rights and constitutionalism

To achieve these objectives the Statement of Intent established party leadership structures to navigate policy differences and maintain the GNU as the model for delivering on these promises based on the outcomes of the 2024 elections.

The inaugural Clearing House meeting was convened by the Deputy President.

The meeting considered draft terms of reference for the Clearing House structure and discussed matters arising from the Statement of Intent that need urgent attention.

There are action commitments contained in the Statement of Intent that GOOD would like to see implemented without delay, including the National Dialogue and the finalisation of an agreed policy agenda. In particular, GOOD would like to place a discussion on the implementation of a Basic Income Grant high on the agenda.

The Deputy President agreed to convene another meeting of the structure next week, if possible, to finalise the Terms of Reference and engage some of the issues raised by party representatives as urgent matters of discussion.

The GOOD Party remains firmly committed to supporting the Government of National Unity.  As Leaders, it is imperative for us to find common ground,

to overcome our differences and to work together for the growth and stability of South Africa.

Issued by Brett Herron, GOOD: Secretary General
