The Gauteng Province is excited and welcomes the decision to host the 15th BRICS Summit scheduled for South Africa in August 2023 in the golden province. This was confirmed by Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele on behalf of  Cabinet on Thursday, 2nd March 2023.

This comes hot off the heels of a successful Meetings Africa 2023 event, which was hosted in Gauteng to full capacity and showcased Africa’s world class facilities and infrastructure for meetings, exhibitions and business events to the international, regional and local trade and buyers.  The BRICS Summit brings together Heads of State, foreign ministers, global media representatives and business delegations from five member countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. South Africa is seeing a steady increase in trade with the BRICS countries and this bodes well for local industries and economic recovery prospects.

In January this year, South Africa took over the chairpersonship of the BRICS forum and Gauteng as the country and the region’s economic and industrial hub is poised not only to play champion host but to use platforms like these as pathways for heightened reindustrialization and trade expansion”, explained Gauteng MEC for Economic Development Tasneem Motata.

This year’s summit will be held under the theme - "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism,"

Gauteng welcomes the prospect of supporting the national government in rolling back red tapes and rolling out the red carpet in true #GautengMeansBusiness style as champion hosts to this esteemed event.

Gauteng played a pivotal role in the development of the African Union via its predecessor Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 in Johannesburg. Since then, the province has continued on a positive trajectory of playing hosts to global business, industrial, political, sporting and cultural events.

There are plenty of benefits for hosting the Summit in Gauteng; the province has a convenient air access network through OR Tambo, Lanseria and Waterkloof Air Base International Airports. The OR Tambo International Airport remains one of Africa’s busiest airports while the Tambo Springs Inland Logistics Port ranks as one of Africa’s biggest in-land ports. The province’s business events hosting prowess is further enhanced by the quality research institutions located across Gauteng with city of Tshwane housing the second largest diplomatic capital in the world.

These world class meeting facilities, highway networks, connectivity, accommodation, and many local attractions are part of an inventory which was recently showcased to the world by the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) at Meetings Africa 2023.  “There is no doubt that the high-profile delegates attending the Summit will have a memorable and authentic African experience rooted in the country’s exceptionalism mecca.  As GTA, we are ready to take full advantage of the BRICS Summit being hosted here, as we see it as an opportunity to contribute to the revival of Gauteng’s visitor economy and the building of a competitive events and conventions city region’’ reiterated Sthembiso Dlamini, CEO of GTA.
