After failing to spend R1.1 billion of its 2023/24 budget, the Gauteng Health Department only managed to get Treasury approval to roll over R530 million for this financial year, which means R570 million is returned to Treasury.
This was disclosed yesterday by Gauteng Head of Department Arnold Malotana at a meeting of the Gauteng Legislature's Health Committee.
It is appalling that so much money has been lost that should have been used to improve healthcare in Gauteng.
Furthermore, according to accrual figures given at yesterday's meeting, R3.45 billion is owed to suppliers for more than 30 days.
The DA believes that a wholesale change of top management is needed to fix the dire inefficiency and corruption in this department which causes immense misery to sick people in public hospitals and clinics.
