Corruption, sexual harassment, misconduct, and the unauthorised use of a state vehicle have cost the Gauteng Department of Roads and Logistics R876 859 34. This money wasted on these cases could have been used for much-needed provincial road maintenance.
This information was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, in a written reply to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) questions tabled in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL).
According to MEC Diale-Tlabela, a total of four cases of misconduct had been recorded by the department. Two officials have been suspended, yet no consequence management has taken place within the department regarding these cases.
This is concerning because disciplinary action must be implemented immediately in cases of misconduct to ensure that it does not happen again.
In many cases, officials found guilty of misconduct resign, and no further action is taken against them.
The DA proposes that the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) implement stringent measures to ensure that any official implicated in misconduct is disciplined immediately, even if a resignation is tendered. Furthermore, no official should be allowed to resign and not face disciplinary action to ensure consequence management and accountability.
