The FW de Klerk Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the Youth GNU Snap Poll, an in-depth survey capturing the perspectives of 92 young South Africans on the first 100 days of the Government of National Unity (“GNU”). This snap poll provides a focused view of youth sentiments, highlighting key trends and concerns from the participants. The findings reveal a cautious optimism tempered by significant scepticism, with respondents highlighting both the potential and challenges of coalition governance.

Christo van der Rheede, Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation, emphasised the importance of engaging the youth in critical political discussions. "Our youth are the guardians of South Africa's future. Their insights on governance, particularly in the early stages of the GNU, offer valuable feedback for our leaders. The survey results reflect the foundational principles of our democracy—transparency, accountability and inclusivity—as enshrined in section 1 of the Constitution."

Key findings from the Snap Poll indicate that 55,4% of respondents believe the GNU has performed “quite well”, yet only 4,3% expressed high confidence in its ability to address critical social issues such as job creation and poverty reduction. A recurring theme in the responses was concern over a lack of unity within the coalition government, with 38% identifying it as the most significant challenge facing the GNU.

Ismail Joosub, Manager of Constitutional Advancement at the Foundation, underscored the urgency of addressing these concerns. "The success of the GNU hinges on its ability to uphold the values of cooperative governance, as outlined in section 41 of the Constitution. This Snap Poll not only gauges youth sentiment, but serves as a call to action for the GNU to strengthen its commitment to economic reform and social justice."

As the youth continue to shape the national dialogue, the Youth GNU Snap Poll serves as both a reflection of the current political climate and a catalyst for meaningful change.
