The Democratic Alliance (DA) expresses deep concern over the devastating floods that have struck Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB). The heavy rains have caused widespread damage, affecting the entire municipality and surrounding areas. We stand with the people of NMB during this challenging time.
Today's Taking Legislature to the People event, which was set to commence today, has been adjourned so that we can fulfil our collective responsibility to assist affected communities on the ground.
While we commend the commitment of those who still made the effort to attend despite the flooding, the safety of all participants must be our top priority. Following a special meeting of the rules committee, it was decided that the sitting would be adjourned.
The DA stresses the importance of being present on the ground in times of crisis, and we will mobilise our public representatives and activists to assist wherever possible. We will actively engage with the affected communities, understanding their immediate needs and offering support.
To this end, we will be heading into the flood-impacted areas to assess the damage and work alongside local authorities to ensure that relief efforts are properly coordinated.
Our thoughts remain with the families and individuals affected by these floods. The DA calls on the provincial government to expedite the delivery of relief and to ensure that assistance reaches all corners of NMB. We will continue to push for immediate disaster responses and long-term measures to mitigate the effects of future floods.
Issued by Dr Vicky Knoetze MPL - DA Leader of the Official Opposition in the Eastern Cape Legislature
