A fire broke out at what is believed to be a hijacked building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg.

No one was injured and all those living inside the three-storey building in Delver Street in the city centre were safely evacuated.

On Friday, Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services media liaison officer Xolile Khumalo said the team got the call just before 10:00.

She said the building appeared to have been hijacked and added that the fire started on the ground floor, where there was a maze of shacks.

The blaze occurred less than 600 metres away from a building at 80 Albert Street, which also went up in flames two weeks ago, claiming 77 lives and injuring several people.
