FIA World Rallycross switch gears with an electrifying return to Cape Town
The all-electric FIA World Rallycross Championship makes its way to the Mother City for a double header at Killarney International Raceway from 7 to 8 October 2023. Read more below:
For those new to the sport, World Rallycross is a combination of rallying and circuit racing that has rally cars going head-to-head in short, sharp races doing incredible and astonishing ramps and jumps that take place on a mixed surface, usually dirt and asphalt.
The FIA World Rallycross Championship race made its debut in Africa for the 2017 season and returned to Cape Town in 2019 for another thrilling contest at Killarney International Raceway.
In 2022, the World RX Championship series entered a new era by going fully-electric.
The 2023 World RX South African leg will feature all-electric races seeing star drivers from Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden compete in ZEROID X1 vehicles.
‘The City of Cape Town is thrilled to support yet another World Championship Motorsports event in the Mother City. Cape Town continues to show its skill in staging world-class and sustainable motorsport events and we look forward to working together with organisers to grow rallycross as a sport.
‘It is exciting to see that the sport is becoming inclusive to women too with Klara Andersson becoming the first ever woman to claim a podium spot last season and now visiting and competing in our city for the first time. This is certainly an event that Capetonian motorsport fans won’t want to miss out on,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.
