Former University of Cape Town (UCT) council chairperson, Babalwa Ngonyama, has resigned from the Vukile Property Fund board of directors.
In an announcement on Thursday, the company said Ngonyama resigned as board member and chair of the audit and risk committee, effective immediately.
The announcement comes a day after the publication of an independent report that found Ngonyama and former vice-chancellor of UCT, Mamokgethi Phakeng, committed "serious governance failures" by misleading the university about the resignation of former deputy-vice chancellor of learning and teaching, Professor Lis Lange.
The report was compiled by an independent panel chaired by former Supreme Court of Appeal president, Judge Lex Mpati.
News24 previously reported that Ngonyama asserted that Lange had left for personal reasons, but Lange said Ngonyama had effectively pushed her out of the institution. The report found that Ngonyama failed to act in her duty as council chair and recommended that her conduct be reported to the regulatory authorities.
According to Vukile Property Fund, Ngonyama's resignation was "in order for her to focus on the legal review process following the allegations and findings of the independent panel that is currently pending."
This is Ngonyama's second resignation this year, after she left the Aspen board in May - shortly after her exit from the UCT council. Phakeng left the institution in March after receiving a R12-million handshake.
