The DA in eThekwini calls on the Municipality’s Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Themba Mvubu, to publish a report on the progress of the Namibia Stop 8 housing project and investigate the alleged unlawful housing of residents without water, electricity and sanitation.

This follows the DA’s oversight inspection at the Namibia Stop 8 Housing Project in Inanda, Durban, on Tuesday. In June 2023, The DA exposed the municipality for having built only 1 RDP house while the city claimed to have spent R83 million for this project. During Tuesday’s oversight we learnt that five months on only nine (9) more low-cost houses, including flat units, have been completed.

This now means only 10 houses have been built while a December 2024 deadline looms for 311 promised homes.

No construction activity is taking place, instead residents have been swiftly moved in despite there being no electricity, water and sanitation in these houses. This is a direct violation of Section 26 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

In May this year, when the municipality requested a further R43 million to finish this project on time, the DA requested a comprehensive report on the project and to date nothing has been received.

This means to date around R126 million has been spent with only 10 low-cost homes with no running water and electricity to show for it.

The roadworks, storm water and water recirculation that the municipality claims it used the R83 million for, is in a dire state.

The DA will continue to fight for the residents of eThekwini and advocate for good governance in this ANC-EFF led Municipality. We expect to receive the requested progress report by no later than next week as we will NOT let the poor be exploited in such a manner.
