Eskom is pleased to announce that the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR), as communicated in the media on 02 September, has extended the comment period for interested and affected parties with regard to its application for the Nuclear Installation Site Licence (NISL) in Thyspunt (Eastern Cape) and Duynefontyn (Western Cape). Interested and affected parties can comment from today up until Wednesday, 19 October 2016.
The notice of the extension of the comment period was published in the National Gazette on Friday last week (16 September 2016) and in the Provincial Gazette today, 19 September.
On 29 July, Eskom published notices in ten (10) newspapers in and around Thyspunt and Duynefontyn, including the Western Cape Provincial Gazette, requesting interested and affected people to send their comments to the NNR by 29 August 2016. The notice in the Eastern Cape Provincial Gazette could only be published on 8 August. While the notices in the 10 newspapers and the Western Cape Provincial Gazette complied with the period of 30 days that is prescribed in the National Nuclear Regulator Act (NNR Act), the notice in the Eastern Cape Provincial Gazette did not.
Eskom then engaged the NNR to re-advertise the notice in the Eastern Cape Provincial Gazette and additionally in the National Government Gazette to give more time for public comment.
